The number of passengers travelling between Brazil and China in the first four months of 2026 exceeded, for the first time, the levels recorded before the Covid-19 pandemic. Between January and April, 5,954 travellers were counted between the two countries, up from 4,297 recorded in the same period of 2019.

The city of Araraquara, in the state of São Paulo, received a Chinese delegation last week for a strategic meeting aimed at deepening institutional relations and identifying new investment opportunities. Timor-Leste and China have strengthened their strategic co-operation in the agricultural sector, aiming to modernise rural development and enhance food security.

China is intensifying the use of the digital yuan in cross-border payments, with a particular focus on connecting to Portuguese-speaking markets. The digital yuan, the world's first state-issued digital currency, began development by the Chinese central bank in 2014, with technical tests carried out in several cities since 2019. The project already supports online and offline payments, smart contracts and integration with international systems.
