In order to commemorate the 204th anniversary of Brazil’s independence, the Brazilian Embassy in China held a commemorative ceremony in Beijing last week. In his speech, Brazil’s ambassador to China, Marcos Galvão, said that the spirit of Brazil’s independence reflects fundamental values upheld by the Brazilian people.

When discussing the 52 years of relations between Brazil and China, Galvão highlighted the growing importance of the bilateral partnership for the development of both countries. China has remained Brazil’s largest trading partner for almost two decades. In turn, Brazil is China’s main supplier of agricultural products, the third-largest source of the country’s crude oil imports, and the main export market for Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles.

In 2025, Brazil also consolidated its position as a leading destination for Chinese foreign direct investment. Galvão considered the results achieved to be the outcome of decades of joint efforts across different sectors of Brazilian and Chinese society.

In June this year, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, visited China and co-chaired the fifth China-Brazil Foreign Ministerial-Level Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue with China’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. The two sides exchanged views on bilateral and global issues.

In addition, several Brazilian ministers responsible for Finance, Agriculture, Health and Culture visited China to promote bilateral co-operation in strategic sectors. At the same time, collaborative initiatives are advancing in cutting-edge areas such as digitalisation, computer science, artificial intelligence, medical research and clinical practice, and green energy.
