99, a technology company focused on urban mobility in Brazil - part of the Chinese group Didi Chuxing - wants to increase its fleet of electric cars in Brazil tenfold, jumping from the current 1,000 to 10,000 by 2025, as well as expanding the charging infrastructure, with 10,000 public stations in the country.

For Fernando Pfeiffer, 99's Innovation Director with a focus on the electric vehicle strategy, this is a perfectly achievable goal, which the company is gradually reaching.

Part of the 1,000 electric vehicles currently being driven in Brazil by 99 are the result of a partnership with Chinese car manufacturer BYD to make it easier for rental companies to acquire these cars.

"Because the electric car is still prohibitive for the vast majority of people from an acquisition perspective, we believe that the rental route has the most potential," says Fernando.
