The role of Portuguese in trade relations between Brazil and China, with particular attention to Macao, was discussed at a seminar held last week at Ibrawork in São Paulo. The meeting brought together representatives of legal, academic and business institutions.

Discussions focused on the use of Portuguese in structuring business transactions and resolving commercial disputes. Participants also examined the role of Zhuhai and Macao in providing access to Portuguese-speaking markets, as well as legal co-operation between Guangdong Province and Macao.

Lin Haitao, President of the Zhuhai Court of International Arbitration (ZCIA), introduced the institution and its activities. Wu Tianyu, also representing the ZCIA, discussed its arbitration services for Portuguese-speaking countries.

Joaquim Vong, President of the Macao Legal Exchange and Promotion Association (MLEPA), discussed legal co-operation between Guangdong and Macao and institutional co-ordination related to trade between China and Brazil.

The initiative brought academic, legal and business institutions into direct contact, with the aim of strengthening trade co-operation, developing international arbitration and expanding exchanges between Portuguese-speaking markets. The meeting also addressed the role of Chinese institutions in international commercial mediation.
