A delegation from Hunan Province, led by its Governor, Mr Xu Dazhe, visited on April 27 the headquarters of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao) – also known as Forum Macao. The group met representatives from the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, including Secretary-General, Ms Xu Yingzhen.

The two sides exchanged views on the establishment of a direct channel of communication to strengthen contacts and co-operation between Hunan Province and Portuguese-speaking Countries, making use of Macao’s role as a platform.

The Hunan delegation included representatives of various services of the Hunan Provincial Government. The aim of the visit was to promote the establishment of a communication mechanism with Forum Macao to strengthen mutual contacts – namely by making use of Macao as a platform. The mechanism would also seek to highlight the competitive advantages of Hunan Province in several fields, including agriculture, science and technology, education, ecology and tourism. Other goals would be to intensify exchanges and co-operation between Hunan Province and Portuguese-speaking Countries in several areas, including the economy, education and culture.

The Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, Ms Xu, welcomed the Hunan delegation and gave a brief presentation on the work of Forum Macao, and the results achieved at the 5th Ministerial Conference of Forum Macao. Ms Xu also discussed the work developed by the Permanent Secretariat in several fields, including: trade and investment promotion; co-operation in production capacity; human resource training; and cultural exchanges.

She stressed that the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao and Hunan Province enjoy a close relationship, and advocated the establishment of a partnership of the two sides – making use of Macao as a platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries – in order to promote co-operation between the Pan-Pearl River Delta Region and the Portuguese-speaking Countries.

During the afternoon of April 27, the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao and the Department of Commerce from Hunan Province signed a “Memorandum of Understanding on Economic Cooperation”.
