China Writers Association President Tie Ning has said more and more modern Chinese literature is being translated into Portuguese, and more and more Portuguese classics are being translated into Chinese, the Beijing Youth Daily reports.

The Chinese Communist Party youth wing newspaper quotes Ms Tie as saying so at a literary gathering in Beijing which formed part of the Portuguese cultural festival in China.

In a separate report, state-run China Radio International quotes Portuguese writer José Luís Peixoto as telling the gathering that the translation into Chinese of one of his novels, Galveias, is in progress and should be finished in time to allow publication next year.

Steps will taken in Portugal to spur the translation of works in Portuguese into other languages, the report quotes Portuguese Culture Minister Graça Fonseca as saying.

The literary gathering is the second of its kind, the first having been held in Lisbon in 2017.
