The Chinese government recently donated medical supplies and equipment worth approximately €40,000 to Cabo Verde. The consignment was intended for Agostinho Neto University Hospital, the country’s largest hospital, with the aim of strengthening its ability to respond to healthcare needs.

The donation includes specialised surgical instruments, diagnostic and emergency equipment, infusion supplies, wheelchairs, stretchers, hospital furniture, surgical attire and materials for traditional Chinese medicine.

According to Cabo Verde’s Minister of Health, Lúcio Miranda Fernandes, the equipment will help improve emergency, surgical, diagnostic and rehabilitation services, as well as specialist care. The minister also highlighted the contribution of Chinese medical teams to strengthening the capacity of health services, facilitating knowledge transfer and supporting the training of Cabo Verdean healthcare professionals. He further stressed the importance of international co-operation in modernising the national health system.

Chinese Ambassador to Cabo Verde Zhang Yang noted that 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He said that China intended to continue supporting Cabo Verde’s health sector within its capabilities.

The ceremony also included the signing of the certificate of delivery and receipt by the minister and the ambassador. In 2024, the two countries renewed the protocol on sending Chinese medical teams to Cabo Verde for the 2024–2029 period.
