The Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique (CTA) recently called for economic and trade co-operation with China to move beyond a model based solely on raw material exports and advance towards joint industrialisation and technology sharing.

Amâncio Gume, Vice-President of CTA, presented the proposal during a meeting with a delegation from the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR (IPIM). Gume advocated local production, the development of value chains, the strengthening of domestic industry and vocational training, highlighting opportunities in agro-processing, renewable energy, logistics and digital transformation.

CTA is accelerating the National Business Certification Programme (PRONACER), which is designed to prepare Mozambican small and medium-sized enterprises to join the supply chains of major projects. Amâncio Gume also requested technical support from IPIM to raise the quality standards of local suppliers and increase their participation in Chinese investment projects.

IPIM Director Sam Lei highlighted China’s zero-tariff policy and invited Mozambican entrepreneurs to attend trade fairs scheduled to be held in Macao in October, focusing on co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.
