The President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta, recently met China’s Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, to strengthen bilateral co-operation in areas including education, social support and cybersecurity.

During the meeting, the Ambassador announced the establishment of an education support fund aimed at facilitating Timorese students’ access to higher education. The initiative will complement a scholarship programme launched in 2019, which has already benefited more than 600 students and is expected to award a further 136 scholarships this year.

The meeting also covered social assistance initiatives for families in several municipalities across the country through the provision of material support, as well as the strengthening of co-operation in combating cybercrime.

China reiterated its commitment to preventing online fraud and commended the work of the Timor-Leste National Police. Both sides expressed their readiness to deepen collaboration between the competent authorities, including the possibility of establishing new co-operation mechanisms in the field of law enforcement.
