China is increasing its imports of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from Mozambique in an effort to diversify its energy supply sources. Although Australia remains the main supplier of LNG to China, accounting for around a third of its imports, the African market is gaining in importance.

Chinese investments in the Mozambican LNG sector illustrate this growing commitment to African gas. The China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) holds a 20% stake in the Rovuma LNG project, valued at 30 billion dollars, an offshore development with the capacity to produce 18 million tonnes of LNG per year.

In addition, CNPC is one of the main investors in the Coral Sul FLNG project, which carried out its first LNG shipment in 2022. The corporate lawyer said that China's growing interest in Mozambican LNG reflects a strategic realignment in its energy sector.
