The first bus of the Mondego Mobility System (SMM) is due to arrive in Portugal in February 2024, from China where the fleet is being produced, Metro Mondego (MM) has announced.

According to MM, initially scheduled for December 2023, the delivery of the prototype was delayed due to the option of installing the optical guidance system in the factory. Once the bus arrives, the SMM integration testing phase will begin, to be carried out on the Serpins - Alto de São João stretch.

The 18 metre long articulated electric buses and the battery charging system were awarded by MM to the company Energia Fundamental - Mobilidade Eléctrica Lda, corresponding to an investment of 40.5 million euros.

The fleet planned for the start of the operation includes 35 buses, and there is also an option to purchase up to 5 additional buses, which can be exercised by MM at a later date.
