Chinese and Mozambican businesspeople have met in Maputo to discuss increasing Sino-Mozambican trade, particularly in engineering and construction services, and in agricultural goods, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency says the Chinese visitors were led by Deputy Governor Zhou Xi’an of the eastern Chinese province of Anhui.

The report says their visit was a consequence of Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi’s visit to China this year to attend a Sino-African summit meeting.

It quotes Mozambican Transport and Communications Minister Carlos Mesquita as telling the meeting that permission has been given for 148 projects, together worth US$751 million, to be undertaken in his country with direct Chinese investment between 2013 and 2018, making China the biggest investor in Mozambique.

“Chinese companies are invited to offer their full support, especially in things that Mozambicans do not do effectively and profitably,” Mr Mesquita said.

The minister said Chinese investment in Mozambique had created 20,000 jobs in the past five years.

The government is reforming the law to create a stable, durable and transparent environment for doing business in Mozambique, Xinhua quotes Mr Mesquita as saying.
