The Mozambican government has authorized the construction of a new port terminal in Chongoene district, Gaza province, which will handle heavy sands extracted by China, reads the statement from the Council of Ministers meeting on the 26th of April.
The project to build the Chonguene port was announced in August 2022, which was funded by Chinese company Ding Sheng Minerals, which has been mining the heavy sands in neighbouring Chibuto district since 2018.
The mining concession to Ding Sheng has a duration of 25 years and, during this period, the company is expected to extract one million tonnes of ilmenite annually, in addition to heavy sands.
China appears as one of the main export destinations of other mines of the same type, owned by firms from other countries, on Mozambican territory.
