Brazilian businessman Renato Buarque de Gusmão, of Agropecuária Dois Irmãos, presented an overview of Pernambuco’s agricultural sector at a seminar on infrastructure development in Portuguese-speaking countries, held last week in Fuzhou, in China’s Fujian Province. He attended at the invitation of the Chinese Consulate in São Paulo.

In his presentation, Gusmão highlighted sugarcane production, beef cattle farming and the distribution of agricultural activities across the state’s different regions. According to the figures presented, sugarcane accounted for 34.5 per cent of Pernambuco’s agricultural production in 2024, worth 2.75 billion reais. For the 2026/27 harvest, Brazil’s National Supply Company (Conab) forecasts production of 13.6 million tonnes of sugarcane.

The businessman also discussed challenges in beef supply and the use of technologies such as mechanisation, irrigation, management systems and livestock tracking. He said he had received a positive response to the figures presented and to the prospects for selling beef in China.

The seminar brought together experts and businesspeople from several Portuguese-speaking countries to promote technical exchanges and discuss financing opportunities for infrastructure projects.
