A delegation led by the Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, Ms Xu Yingzhen, took part in the“1st China International Import Expo” (CIIE) from November 4 to 6 in Shanghai. The aim of the event was to help firms better understand Portuguese-speaking Countries and products from those countries, as well as to strengthen communication in economic and trade matters between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries.


The delegation visited the “Macao Hub” exhibition area and the “Macao Investment Cooperation Forum – Introduction to the Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”. The latter was co-organised by the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Governmentand Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM).

The 1st CIIE was organised by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. It was held at Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Centre from November 5 to 10. CIIE consisted of an exhibition and the Hongqiao International Economic and Trade Forum. The overall event served as an important measure of China’s firm support for trade liberalisation, economic globalisation and the opening up of the Chinese market to the world, based on China’s own initiative.


The “Macao Investment Cooperation Forum – Introduction to the Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries” was held at Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Centre on the morning of November 6. The Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao SAR, Mr Leong Vai Tac; Deputy Director-General of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Mr Yao Jian; Director-General of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government Mr Zhou Yajun; Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao Ms Xu; and Executive Director of IPIM, Mr Sam Lei, attended the Forum. The focus of it was to present information on Forum Macao, on Macao’s role as a Commercial and Trade Co-operation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, and on the China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Co-operation and Development Fund. Firms from Portuguese-speaking Countries and from Macao also gave presentations. Three cooperation projects were signed at the Forum, aiming to stimulate diversified cooperation in sectors such as youth entrepreneurship, finance, technology and international trade, and to promote wine sales and friendly cooperation among business associations.


Ms Xu pointed out in her speech that the report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China proposed among other things: support for the further integration of Hong Kong and Macao into the country’s overall development; the advancement of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area; and the cooperation of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao – as well as the collaboration of the places in the wider Pan-Pearl River Delta region – in order fully to enhance mutual beneficial cooperation between Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao.


In recent years, Macao had played a major role in helping Chinese firms to understand Portuguese-speaking Countries and their products, and in strengthening the links between provinces and cities of Mainland China and Portuguese-speaking countries, as well as in exploring economic and trade cooperation among the various parties. Ms Xu also outlined that China and Portuguese-speaking Countries could make full use of the unique commercial and trade platform of Macao to develop and achieve mutual benefits for Mainland China, Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries.


During its Shanghai visit, the delegation had a meeting with government representatives from the Baoshan District of Shanghai. The delegation also visited local robotics companies, the China 3D-Printing Cultural Museum and a display presented by the “Exhibition Centre of Food and Alcoholic Beverages of Portuguese-speaking Countries,” an institution based in Macao. The delegation also established relationships and contacts with various companies.
