Gaza Province, in southern Mozambique, is expected to resume wheat production in the current quarter with the help of Chinese technology, local media reported on May 27.

The inaugural sowing is scheduled to begin within a few days at Regadio do Baixo Limpopo in Xai-Xai, said Margarida Chongo, governor of Gaza Province, as quoted by Rádio Moçambique.

"In the initial phase, more than 150 hectares will be allocated to wheat cultivation," said the governor. The revival of wheat production in the Lower Limpopo Regadio, almost 50 years later, was possible thanks to cooperation with Chinese technology, facilitated by the company Wanbao.

Currently, Mozambique produces only 20 thousand tons of the 450 thousand tons of wheat it consumes annually, with the rest being imported. Chongo said that wheat cultivation aims to solve the shortage and high cost of this cereal in the country.
