A delegation of the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), led by Deputy Secretaries-General Mr Ding Tian and Mr Rodrigo Brum, visited Nanning in Guangxi Province between September 20 and 22. The goal of the trip was to take part in a number of economic and trade promotion activities.

During the visit, the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao hosted the “Forum on Production Capacity Cooperation between Guangxi, Macao and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”. The delegation also toured the facilities of local enterprises. The overall aim of the visit was to strengthen cooperation between different municipalities and provinces in Mainland China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, including on the topic of production capacity.

The delegation had a meeting with the Deputy Secretary General of the People’s Government of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Mr Yang Bin. Mr Yang said that Guangxi – as an important gateway within the “Belt and Road” national initiative and a leading base for cooperation between China and the ASEAN countries – hoped to strengthen economic and trade cooperation with the Portuguese-speaking Countries, namely through Macao’s role as platform. That would, in turn, lead to benefits for Guangxi, Macao and the Portuguese-speaking Countries, he said.

During its stay in Guangxi, the Forum Macao delegation toured the Nanning-Zhongguancun Innovation Demonstration Base and the Meili Nanfang area in Xixiangtang District, two examples of innovation in the field of agriculture. The site visits enabled the Representatives of Portuguese-speaking Countries in Forum Macao to have a better understanding of Nanning’s economic development work.

On October 21, the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao held the “Forum on Production Capacity Cooperation between Guangxi, Macao and the Portuguese-speaking Countries”, in partnership with the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of Guangxi. It was attended by more than 50 business representatives, from several sectors, including: aluminium production, water and power supply, construction, the fishery industry, agriculture, science and technology, carmaking, trading, communications and tourism.

During the Forum on Production Capacity Cooperation, representatives from the Guangxi Development and Reform Commission and from the Guangxi Department of Commerce delivered presentations on the local investment environment, and discussed the interest of local authorities in promoting production capacity cooperation. Forum Macao Deputy Secretary-General Mr Ding briefed participants about the work of Forum Macao, Macao’s role as a cooperation platform, and about collaboration on production capacity.

Mr Ding noted that the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao had previously established ties in several fields – including economic matters, trade and culture – with entities in Guangxi Province. That included the hosting, in Guangxi, of activities promoting Portuguese-speaking Countries. Additionally, the Youjiang Ethnic Dances and Songs Group of Guangxi Province had been one of the guest artists for the 9th Cultural Week of China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, held by Forum Macao in 2017, to showcase to Macao’s population and visitors the unique ethnic customs of Guangxi.

During the Forum on Production Capacity Cooperation, the Representatives from Portuguese-speaking Countries in Forum Macao also delivered presentations about the investment environment, policies and projects on production capacity in their respective nations. Following the Forum, the Representatives from Portuguese-speaking Countries took part in exchanges with other event participants, covering several topics, including economic, trade and production capacity cooperation.

The visit to Guangxi by a delegation from the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao helped to deepen exchanges and cooperation between enterprises from Mainland China and those from Portuguese-speaking Countries. It also promoted closer ties with Guangxi’s economic and trade authorities. The Representatives from Portuguese-speaking Countries in Forum Macao had the chance to learn more about Guangxi’s current stage of development. In addition, through direct exchanges with business representatives, Representatives from Portuguese-speaking Countries were able to promote the investment environment in their respective nations, and strengthen information-sharing on such matters.

The visit also demonstrated how further exchanges between enterprises from Mainland China and those from Portuguese-speaking Countries could be stimulated, namely via the use of multilateral mechanisms such as Forum Macao and by making use of Macao’s unique advantages.
