The China-Africa cooperation project between counterpart hospitals, initiated by President Xi Jinping at the 73rd World Health Organization conference, aims to create sustainable healthcare systems in African hospitals.

São Tomé and Príncipe was the first beneficiary, with Sichuan University Hospital collaborating with Ayres de Menezes Hospital.

At the project evaluation meeting held on August 27 at Ayres de Menezes Central Hospital, a representative of the Chinese team indicated that since August 2023, four doctors from São Tomé and Príncipe have been taking specialist courses at Sichuan University Hospital in intensive care and anesthesiology. In addition, China has installed and equipped the first cardiology intensive care unit at Ayres de Menezes Central Hospital, providing equipment and medicines. The project aims not only to provide immediate assistance but also to train local professionals to improve the sustainability of the health system.

“Our government will continue to strengthen cooperation with the People’s Republic of China, especially in the area of health, which is one of the country’s major problems,” said Acting Health Minister Célsio Junqueira.
