The Chinese government and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) have launched the project "Emergency support for children in response to floods and covid-19 in Timor-Leste" to complement the Timor-Leste government's support for affected communities, especially those affected by the April 2021 floods.

The Chinese Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Wang Wenli, said that the project will help 83,000 children in the municipalities of Ainaro, Baucau, Díli and Ermera to receive essential nutrition services, 34,000 pregnant women to be supported with counseling services on nutrition and breastfeeding, and 10,000 people to have access to water and sanitation services and hygiene products.

For his part, UNICEF Representative Bilal Durani thanked the Government of China for its support, saying that it will contribute to the reconstruction of basic social services for children and families, as well as supporting disaster risk reduction mechanisms to mitigate the impact of future meteorological phenomena.
