The Mozambican Government is committed to attracting a greater amount of domestic and foreign investment to the nation’s fisheries sector. There is particular interest in infrastructure-related investment said Mozambique’s Minister of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, Agostinho Mondlane.
The Minister noted fishing ports were strategic economic infrastructure for the nation and the construction of further ports or the remodelling of existing ones could be achieved via public-private partnership, local newspaper Notícias reported this week.
The recent reconstruction of Beira’s fishing port was a good example of public-private collaboration, Mr Mondlane was quoted as saying.
The US$120-million revamp of Beira’s port – financed by China –started last month, local newspaper Folha de Maputo reported. The work would take a year to complete, and would expand the handling capacity of the port from 30,000 tonnes of fish to 70,000 tonnes, it added.
