China is open to further co-operation with Portugal, said Cai Run, China’s new Ambassador to the European country, as quoted by news portal Macauhub.

Mr Cai Run made his remarks on Tuesday in a meeting with the President of Portugal, Cavaco Silva, to whom he presented his credentials.

The Chinese Ambassador also recalled how the two countries reached important consensus on bilateral relations and co-operation, when China’s President, Xi Jinping, visited Portugal’s Ilha Terceira, in the Azores archipelago.

President Silva stressed – as quoted by Macauhub – the role Macao currently plays in developing relations between Portugal and China. He also recalled the success of Macao’s handover to China, calling it “an example for the international community”.

In addition, Mr Silva said Portugal – as a member of the European Union (EU) – is willing to play an active role in developing the relationship between the EU and China.

Mr Cai Run noted during the meeting that the Portugal-China Global Strategic Partnership celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2015.
