The Chinese government has officially authorized the first 21 Brazilian companies to export sesame to China. As the world’s largest importer of sesame, China accounts for 38.4% of global sesame consumption, demonstrating its potential as a strategic market for Brazilian agribusiness.
This market breakthrough was achieved at the end of 2024 during the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Brazil. However, the official approval for the exporting companies was only finalized last week as part of the standard company accreditation process. Currently, Brazil ranks seventh among global sesame exporters, accounting for 5.31% of global sesame trade.
In 2023, China imported USD 1.53 billion worth of sesame, a direct reflection of the high demand for the product, solidifying China’s position as the world’s top sesame buyer. With these new opportunities, Brazil is expanding its presence in the international market and strengthening its agricultural production.
