The Brazilian subsidiary of State Grid Corp. of China is sponsoring the conservation of Valongo Wharf, part of the built heritage of the Brazilian coastal city of Rio de Janeiro, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency says the subsidiary, State Grid Brazil Holding SA, will pay for a museum and visitor centre at Valongo Wharf, for arrangements for securing and lighting the place, and for teaching pupils at nearby secondary schools and students at 11 nearby universities about the antiquity.

The report quotes State Grid Brazil Chairman Cai Hongxian as saying his company regards manifestations of Brazilian culture as important.

Chinese companies actively plough back money they make in Brazil into preserving Brazilian culture and developing Brazilian society, Xinhua quotes Chinese Deputy Consul-General in Rio de Janeiro Chen Yongcan as saying.
