NOS SGPS SA of Portugal and Huawei Technology Co. Ltd of China have formed a partnership to give the northern Portuguese city of Matosinhos a fifth-generation (5G) wireless telecommunication network, Lusa reports.

The Portuguese news agency, citing a written statement issued by NOS, says the 5G network, the first in Portugal, is already working, and that the local authorities, companies and researchers in Matosinhos can now try it out.

NOS said on Wednesday it is using the city as a test bed for 5G wireless telecommunications solutions and services for families, companies and the public administration.

The Matosinhos 5G network uses about 20 cellular base stations to cover the entire city, along with a technology zone nearby and the port of Leixões, Lusa quotes the NOS statement as saying.
