Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has opened the new fishing port in the city of Beira, which China paid US$120 million to build, O País reports.

The Mozambican newspaper quotes Mr Nyusi as saying at the opening ceremony that he hopes the fishing port, the biggest in his country, will serve to keep Mozambicans supplied with sufficient fish and even to allow the export of fish.

The report says a cyclone in 2000 destroyed the old fishing port.

Construction of the new port began in 2016, the report says.

China will support projects in Mozambique that are economically viable and sustainable, labour-intensive, and help generate exports, O País quotes Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique Su Jian as saying at the opening ceremony.
