Representatives of an audiovisual company from China met on Saturday with Cape Verde’s President Jorge Carlos Fonseca to discuss investment opportunities in the African nation, Portuguese newspaper A Bola reported.
The delegation representing the Chinese company – which was not named by the media outlet – met Mr Fonseca in Johannesburg, in South Africa, on the sidelines of the Second Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
During a speech at a Summit, the Cape Verdean President hailed the role of the FOCAC as “a place for interaction and sharing”, according to a press release from the African country’s Presidency.
“The partnership and the co-operation between China and Africa will awaken to new development processes,” Mr Fonseca was quoted as saying.
During his speech, the Cape Verdean President also said the African nation “urgently” needed to find partners that could provide “investments and other funding” to support the country’s goal of further exploring its maritime resources.
The Summit ended on Saturday, with the signing of what is referred to as the Johannesburg Declaration and the “FOCAC-Johannesburg action plans (2016-2018)”. On Friday, China’s President Xi Jinping announced his country would offer US$60 billion to Africa to support the funding of 10 new co-operation and development programmes to be pursued in the coming three years, according to Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua.
