The volume of sales of Mozambique cashew nuts in the current 2015/16 harvesting season could increase 25 percent from the previous harvest, said Filomena Maiópuè, Director of the country’s National Institute of Cashew Production (Incaju).
Online news portal Macauhub reported this week that the Director made the remarks on the sidelines of an official launch in Nampula province for cashew sales.
The Director noted cashew sales volume in the previous season amounted to 80,000 tonnes, believing it was “possible” for sales in the 2015/16 season to reach 100,000 tonnes.
There are currently 14 cashew processing plants in Mozambique. Most of them are in Nampula province, according to the report. Nampula has approximately 14 million cashew trees, making the province the biggest producer of the agricultural commodity in the East African nation.
