Cape Verde is the sixth most competitive country in Africa in the tourism field, Cape Verdean newspaper A Semana reported last week.

Cape Verde ranked 86th in the World Economic Forum’s 2015 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index overall ranking. The list, which covers 141 countries, was led by Spain for the first time.

Newspaper A Semana reported Cape Verde attracted 540,000 tourists in 2014. The nation followed South Africa, the Seychelles, Mauritius, Namibia and Kenya in the African rankings.

According to the World Economic Forum’s report, Portugal ranked 15th, while China was considered the 17th most competitive country in the tourism sector.

Brazil was ranked 28th, Mozambique 130th and Angola 139th.

According to the World Economic Forum, the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index measures “the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the travel and tourism sector, which in turn, contributes to the development and competitiveness of a country.” The index is published biennially.
