Cape Verde’s new Data Center was officially launched on Wednesday in the country’s capital city, Praia. The governments of China, Portugal and Cape Verde funded the new technological infrastructure.
In a statement issued before the ceremony – and quoted by Cape Verdean newspaper A Nação –, Jorge Lopes, manager of Cape Verde’s Operational Unit for Information Society (NOSI), said the infrastructure was a “crucial component” of the Cape Verde Technology Park, a facility that would help the country further develop in the field of communication and information technology.
The Data Center, Mr Lopes argued, is “extremely safe” and was designed to meet the highest international standards. He added the centre – which is ready to provide services both nationally and internationally – would have thousands of servers for data storage and information processing.
The public administration, banking, insurance, health and education sectors, among others, will be able to use the services provided by the Data Center.
The construction of the new infrastructure started in 2010.
According to the press release, Cape Verde’s Prime Minister, José Maria Neves, was due to preside at the launch ceremony.
