The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and Chinese company CNNC Overseas Limited, a subsidiary of the Beijing-headquartered China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), recently signed a memorandum on technical co-operation and research in the nuclear sector. Valid for five years, the memorandum was signed by UFRJ Rector Roberto Medronho and CNNC Overseas Limited Director Hu Pengfei.

The memorandum provides for the joint development of small modular reactors, studies aimed at improving uranium exploration, and the exchange of researchers and students. The initiative seeks to bring the scientific capabilities of the two countries closer together in the field of clean, safe and low-carbon energy.

Roberto Medronho said that mastery of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes was important for sustainable development, energy security and Brazil’s scientific sovereignty. He also stressed the need to comply with rigorous international standards on safety and environmental responsibility.

UFRJ has conducted research and provided training in nuclear engineering since the 1950s. Its Nuclear Engineering Programme, established in 1968, was a pioneer in Latin America. UFRJ is currently the only Brazilian university to offer an undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering and has already awarded master’s degrees to more than 600 students and doctoral degrees to hundreds more. Its research areas include reactor physics and engineering, nuclear safety, radiation protection, the fuel cycle and risk analysis.
