On the morning of May 31, the Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in Macao SAR, Mr Zheng Xiaosong, visited the Permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao), a body also known as Forum Macao. Mr Zheng was accompanied by Liaison Office Deputy Director Mr Yao Jian, for the exchange meeting discussing work guidelines. The Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, Ms Xu Yingzhen, took part in the meeting, which was also attended by Permanent Secretariat members.


Ms Xu warmly welcomed the Liaison Office officials and thanked the Liaison Office for its attention to – and its advice and strong support for – the work of Forum Macao. During the meeting Ms Xu offered a brief review of the work carried out by Forum Macao and outlined the activities to celebrate its 15th anniversary which falls this year. She discussed Forum Macao’s main efforts in the promotion of economic and trade ties between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries; cooperation on production capacity; cooperation between Provinces and Municipalities of Forum Macao’s State-members; cooperation on human resources; cultural exchanges; and Macao’s “Platform” role.


After the presentations by Ms Xu and by Permanent Secretariat members, Mr Zheng reaffirmed in his remarks the great importance that the Central Government attached to the implementation in Macao of the “One Centre, One Platform” strategy, which aimed to support the adequate diversification of the city’s economy. Mr Zheng said that, throughout the 15 years since the establishment of Forum Macao, its Members had formed sincere ties on matters of cooperation, in support of mutual development. In addition, the Macao SAR Government had given great support to, and carried out tireless work on, boosting intergovernmental cooperation, cooperation on trade and investment promotion, people-to-people exchanges, training of human resources, and the implementation of the “One Platform” policy, with positive results.


The Liason Office’s Mr Zheng made five suggestions regarding the future direction of the Permanent Secretariat’s work: 1) to improve Forum Macao’s work mechanism and the implementation of policies to promote Macao as cooperation platform; 2) to expand the depth and range of economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, in tandem with the “Belt and Road” initiative; 3) to implement effectively the guidelines included in the “Strategic Plan for Economic and Trade Co-operation” and in the “Memorandum of Understanding on Promoting Co-operation in Production Capacity”, both signed during the 5th Ministerial Conference of Forum Macao; 4) to strengthen people-to-people exchanges between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries; and 5) to support the Macao SAR Government in the timely construction of the “Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Complex”.


Mr Zheng assured listeners that the Liaison Office would continue to support the work carried out by the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao. He also expressed the hope that Forum Macao’s work mechanism could continue to be improved with everyone’s help, and thereby expand the space for cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. Mr Zheng also mentioned the support that must be given to the Macao SAR Government regarding the latter’s effort to turn Macao into a “Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries”.
