The New Year celebration is the biggest festival in the People's Republic of China. Historical reports indicate that the Chinese began to establish roots in São Tomé and Príncipe between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Last weekend, the Chinese embassy in São Tomé and Príncipecelebrated the Chinese New Year festival. The community in the country and its descendants participated in the celebration.

“I am honored to announce that the embassy has designated 2024 as the Year of Chinese Culture. A series of cultural activities will be held in São Tomé and Príncipe, such as film shows, television programs, etc.", said Xu Yingzhen, Chinese ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe.

Marked by various Chinese cultural activities, the celebration of the Year of the Dragon allowed descendants to prove that the relationship between São Tomé and Príncipe and China goes beyond diplomacy.
