The Brazilian government has said it will no longer complain to the World Trade Organization about the Chinese import tariff on Brazilian sugar because Brasilia and Beijing have settled their differences over the matter, Reuters reports.

The news agency says the Brazilian Foreign Ministry and Agriculture Ministry said so in announcing the settlement, but that they failed to disclose the terms of the settlement.

The report quotes a written statement issued by the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association as saying China has agreed to drop the tariff when it expires in May 2020.

China imposed in 2017 a tariff of 45 percent on imports of sugar from Brazil over the amount of 1.94 million tonnes a year, with a view to protecting Chinese sugar farmers as world prices for sugar dropped.

The tariff has severely reduced Brazilian exports of sugar to China, Reuters says.
