World Bank tips Cabo Verde to be star economic performer

The World Bank forecasts that the economy of Cabo Verde will be the fastest-growing this year among the Portuguese-speaking Countries included in the latest edition of Global Economic Prospects.

The World Bank publication released this week forecasts that the Cabo Verde economy – which expanded by 4.5 percent in 2018 – will grow by 4.4 percent this year, 4.6 percent next year and 4.7 percent the year after.

The World Bank forecasts that the economy of Guiné-Bissau will come second, growing by 4.3 percent this year, 4.8 percent next year and 5.5 percent the year after.

It forecasts that the economy of Timor Leste will rebound this year, growing by 3.9 percent this year, after declining 0.7 percent in 2018. Timor-Leste will grow 4.6 percent next year and 5 percent the year after, the report adds.

This year the economy of Mozambique will slow to 2 percent-growth from 3.3 percent last year and that of Angola will recover from a decline of 1.7 percent last year to grow by 1 percent, the World Bank predicts.

It forecasts that, after expanding by 1.1 percent in 2018, the economy of Brazil will grow by 1.5 percent this year, 2.5 percent next year and 2.3 percent in 20212.

The latest edition of Global Economic Prospects gives no forecasts of economic growth in Portugal or São Tomé e Príncipe.
