The Confucius Institute at the University of Minho will host Portugal’s first, official Chinese-language exams for children and teenagers, the Semanário V newspaper reports.

The Youth Chinese Test will be held on March 24 at the university’s Braga campus. The weekly newspaper says the exams are open to all and the qualification will be valid anywhere in the world.

The Confucius Institute has taught more than 1,000 primary and secondary school students around Northern Portugal to speak Mandarin. Some students have been able to access the Chinese in Schools project in 14 schools located in five municipalities.

Semanário V says the University of Minho launched Portugal’s first Confucius Institute about 12 years ago.
