Beijing has earmarked US$146 million for São Tomé and Príncipe to build the infrastructure in deals agreed to earlier this month, the Macauhub website reports.
Included are works to modernise São Tomé International Airport and the construction of a deep-water port.
The website quotes São Tomé and Príncipe Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada who reportedly said the airport was key to the country’s development as a “destination for Chinese tourists”.
Last month’s bilateral economic co-operation deal includes credits on preferential terms for public and private companies in the African nation, he said. “We also aim to promote and encourage the Chinese private sector to invest in tourism, renewable energy, trade and infrastructure,” he said.
Macauhub reports the mainland has decided to pardon an outstanding debt of US$28 million and will offer 20 internships and scholarships for students and professionals each year.
Mr Trovoada visited the mainland earlier this month, the first visit since the two nations resumed formal diplomatic ties in December.
