Aid worth more than US$1.2 million to tackle an outbreak of yellow fever has been ratified by the donor China and the recipient country Angola, reported Angolan news agency Angop. A signing ceremony was held on Tuesday in the African country’s capital, Luanda.

Under the agreement, the Chinese Government would continue to monitor the development of the outbreak, and be prepared to offer more support if needed, the report said.

The Chinese side is to send a medical team to Angola offering free treatment, and would also donate hospital supplies and equipment worth 5 million yuan (US$766,860), the documents said.

That is in addition to the US$500,000 cash donation the Chinese Embassy announced earlier this month. The money is to help Angola buy yellow fever vaccine.

Portuguese news agency Lusa reported earlier this month there had been more than 100 confirmed cases of the disease and 38 deaths since an outbreak began in December.

Yellow fever is transmitted to humans via mosquito bite. It can cause fever and jaundice, and can be fatal.
