Chinese firm China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic and Technical Cooperation has built more than 100 wells to provide safe water for millions of Mozambicans, Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported.
Construction of wells under the initiative began in 2014, as part of a Chinese aid project agreed between the two governments in 2011, the agency added.
Cao Youwei, an engineer with China Jiangxi Corporation, said: “The wells can penetrate the clay pan to extract the ground water for use, so the quality and quantity of the water from the wells can be guaranteed.”
It is estimated that the well project could benefit 5.4 million people in Mozambique, Xinhua said.
“Local people’s life is changing thanks to the water project,” Arlindo Correia, head of the Water Supply Office of the National Water Directorate of Mozambique, said. “It is very important to us,” he added.
