Mozambique plans to boost its cashew nut production by 25 percent year-on-year in the current 2015/16 agricultural season, said Carlos Mucavel, deputy director of Incaju, the National Cashew Institute.

Macau online media outlet Macauhub reported the latest target for the cashew crop is 100,000 tons, about 20,000 tons more than the amount recorded in the 2014/15 season.

In a bid to reach the target, Incaju will have to spray more than 4 million cashew trees and distribute over 3.3 million seedlings across the country, Mr Mucavel was quoted as saying.

He also noted the country would have to increase the number of factories processing the nuts and consequently raise investments for the construction of such industrial units.

“Our focus will be increased production, primary processing and secondary processing, as well as on quality and quantity – guaranteeing income for households working with the cashew crop,” he said.

Mr Mucavel added that the cashew industry supports the livelihoods of 1.4 million households across the nation.
