The Portuguese Environment Agency reported that the environmental licensing process for the "Lithium Battery Industrial Unit" project, promoted by China Aviation Lithium Battery Technology (CALB) in Sines, is underway, with the public consultation between 19 January and 29 February.
The investment planned by the Chinese battery giant is around 2,000 million euros for an installed capacity of almost 43 million cells per year. In total, the factory will have five production lines. In 2028, CALB plans to expand the Sines facilities, allowing it to "scale from 15 to 45 GWh." There may even be a third phase to double capacity.
According to the documents under public consultation, the project implementation area is located on 91 hectares of the Sines Industrial Logistics Zone (ZIL), and in total, it will have five buildings for the production of electrodes, cell manufacturing, training and assembly, packaging and casing manufacturing.
