Portugal’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.9 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2016, reported Statistics Portugal on Wednesday.

The April to June GDP growth rate – as measured in year-on-year terms – was the same as for the previous quarter, according to the bureau.

But the body noted that the contribution of domestic demand to GDP fell sequentially in the second quarter, from 1.7 percentage points in the first quarter of 2016 to 0.6 percentage points in the second quarter. This had a negative impact on the year-on-year GDP growth for the second quarter.

Statistics Portugal added that “the contribution of net external demand increased to 0.2 percentage points,” after a negative contribution of 0.7 percentage points in the previous quarter. The imports of goods and services in the second quarter decelerated more intensely than the exports of goods and services, it added.
