China will spend US$10 million to improve the supply of fish to consumers in Guinea Bissau, said Wang Hua, Chinese Ambassador to the African nation.

Online media outlet Macauhub reported that a Chinese fishing company would soon start operations in the nation’s capital, Bissau, creating 400 jobs for locals.

The aim was to end a recent local shortage of fish for consumers in the country, Mr Wang said.

The Chinese company “will process the catch of artisanal fisheries and establish a sales network in the country, particularly in the inland provinces,” he added, as quoted by Macauhub.

The Ambassador also said China would help the African nation to boost its production of rice. A group of 30 young technicians from Guinea Bissau is to visit China next week to receive training on farming techniques.

Earlier this month, the Guinea Bissau government announced it would soon buy 500 tractors for agricultural production to mark a first step toward mechanisation of agriculture in the country.
