Chinese firm China Harbour Engineering Company is participating in a string of initiatives to help preserve the wetlands in the southern harbour city of Lobito, in Angola, reports Chinese state-owned news agency Xinhua.

The area is a key part of the migration route of flamingos from neighbouring Namibia to Kenya.

China Harbour is joining hands with local volunteers and governmental environmental protection organisations in safeguarding the wetlands to provide a better environment for the migrating birds.

The Chinese company has also organised awareness campaigns on the habits of flamingos to educate local residents and Chinese expatriates working in Lobito.

Since 2006, China Harbour has constructed or rebuilt 16 harbours for Angola. The company said that the protection of flamingos and conservation of the wetlands in Lobito is part of its corporate social responsibility efforts.
