The closing and certificate award ceremony of the Seminar on Traditional Medicine Cooperation for Participants from Portuguese-speaking Countries was held on September 27. The seminar was organised by the Training Centre of Forum Macao in cooperation with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao.


This was the third training seminar organised by the Training Centre of Forum Macao this year. It was held from September 16 to 29 in Macao. As part of the programme, visits were also arranged to Zhuhai’s Hengqin New Area and to the city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province, in Mainland China. A total of 29 officials and experts from related areas from seven Portuguese-speaking Countries – namely Angola, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste – attended the seminar.


The participants attended a series of thematic lectures and exchange visits in Macao, focusing on: Macao’s role as a cooperation platform between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries; Macao’s policies and regulations on traditional medicine; and the development of the traditional medicine industry. Participants also took part in the 2019 Traditional Medicine International Cooperation Forum (Macao, China).


During their visit to the Hengqin New Area, the seminar participants toured the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao to gain in-depth knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine.


In Chengdu, they took part in exchange activities related to: food safety supervision and regulation regarding food products used in traditional medicine; and to technological advances in environmentally-friendly medicine practices. Participants also had a chance to experience traditional Chinese medicine therapies and exercises. They additionally visited local traditional Chinese medicine hospitals and facilities for the production of Chinese herbal medicines; and exchanged views with local representatives respectively from government departments and companies in this area.


Officiating guests at the closing ceremony included: the Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao, Ms Xu Yingzhen; the Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Ms Li Huaying; the Consul-General of Angola in the Macao SAR, Ms Sofia Pegado da Silva; the Consul-General of Mozambique in Macao, Mr Rafael Custódio Marques; the Consul-General of Portugal in Macao and Hong Kong, Mr Paulo Cunha Alves; the Vice-President of the Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao, Mr Yves Xie; Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao (appointed by the People’s Republic of China), Mr Ding Tian; Deputy Secretary-General of the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao (appointed by the Portuguese-speaking Countries), Mr Rodrigo Brum; and the Representatives from the Portuguese-speaking Countries to the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao.


Speeches were given at the closing ceremony by Secretary-General Ms Xu, Industrial Park Vice-President Mr Xie, and by Ms Maria de Fátima da Luz Pires Lima, the latter representing the seminar participants.


In her speech, Ms Xu noted traditional medicine was seen as an important industry to promote Macao’s economic diversification. She also highlighted the importance given to cooperation on traditional medicine in the Strategic Plan for Economic and Trade Co-operation of the 5th Ministerial Conference of Forum Macao.


Ms Xu said active participation by all parties involved in Forum Macao had led to deeper cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries on traditional medicine, with satisfactory results achieved. She said she was hopeful that China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries could make full use of the cooperation platform developed by the Macao Government, continuing to promote cooperation on medical technology, scientific research, human resource training, and promotion of traditional medicine.


The participants in the seminar emphasised that the event had helped improve their knowledge regarding cooperation in traditional medicine between Mainland China and Macao. It had also enhanced their knowledge about Macao’s role as a Commercial and Trade Cooperation Service Platform between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, thus fostering exchanges between Guangdong, Macao and Portuguese-speaking Countries on traditional medicine. In addition, participants also said the seminar had been useful to explore potential opportunities for cooperation.
