Coppe/UFRJ signed an agreement with the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to carry out two research projects focused on renewable energy in the ocean. The planned investment is R$16 million.

The first will study floating wind turbines at depths of 60 to 150 meters. The second project will research the decarbonization of oil and gas exploration and production activities in the pre-salt, at depths of 500 to 2,500 meters. The initiative will adopt an innovative hybrid park concept, combining wind, wave and solar sources.

Both projects, lasting three years, involve the collaboration of more than 30 researchers from four different Coppe laboratories.

According to Segen Estefen, coordinator of the Ocean Renewable Energy Group (Gero), the partnership with CNOOC is an extension of the collaboration established with the China Petroleum University in 2001.
