Brazilian farmers are increasing the amount of land planted with cotton so they can sell more of their crop to China, where the Sino-US trade war has made importing US cotton more expensive because of an import tariff of 25 percent, DTN reports.

The agricultural news agency quotes the Brazilian Association of Cotton Producers as forecasting that the area planted with cotton in the state of Mato Grosso, which grows about 88 percent of the cotton Brazil produces, will increase to 1.4 million hectares.

Brazil is increasing its share of the expanding market for cotton in China because of the Chinese tariff on imports from the United States, DTN quotes the US National Cotton Council as saying.

Separately, Agri-Pulse, an agricultural news website, reports that the Brazilian share of the Chinese market for foreign cotton increased to 21 percent last year from 5 percent the year before, and says the Brazilian share will remain a feature of Chinese international trade for a long time.
