Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for his country and Mozambique to commit themselves to co-operating better and more efficiently under the Chinese Belt and Road initiative, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese government-run news agency quotes Mr Xi as saying so when he met Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi in Beijing. Mr Nyusi is in China for six days, namely to attend the Second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation from today to Saturday.

Mr Xi said China and Mozambique should increase cultural exchanges and exchanges between ordinary Chinese and Mozambicans to maintain the traditional Sino-Mozambican friendship.

The report quotes Mr Nyusi as expressing willingness to increase Sino-Mozambican co-operation in many fields, to swap know-how about governance and to contribute to the progress of the Belt and Road programme in Africa.

The news agency says Mr Xi and Mr Nyusi witnessed the signing of co-operation agreements, one of them to do with the Belt and Road initiative.

Mr Nyusi also met the head of the Chinese legislature, Li Zhanshu, who called for better Sino-Mozambican co-operation in infrastructure, in agriculture, and in energy and other resources, Xinhua says.
