Over 6.5 million tourists visited Brazil last year, about 42,000 more than the year before and the most on record, Xinhua reports.

The Chinese state-run news agency, citing figures compiled by the Brazilian Tourism Ministry, says 4.1 million of the visitors were from elsewhere in South America.

The report says the biggest source of tourists that visited Brazil last year was Argentina, which sent 2.6 million, up 14.3 percent from 2016.

The United States and Chile trailed behind as the second- and third-largest source in 2017 with 475,200 visitors and 342,100 visitors respectively, the report said.

About 61,250 Chinese visited, 1 percent more than the year before, making their country the 17th-biggest source of tourists in Brazil, Xinhua says.
