The unemployment rate in Brazil increased in February to 8.2 percent, the nation’s Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, in the Portuguese acronym) estimated on Wednesday.
Last month’s reading indicates both year-on-year and month-on-month increases. In February 2015, Brazil’s unemployment rate stood at 5.8 percent. In January this year, it stood at 7.2 percent, according to the institute.
According to IBGE, there were – in February – 2 million people unemployed in Brazil; an increase of 136,000 people compared to January.
IBGE’s Monthly Employment Survey is based on a survey in six metropolitan areas.
Brazil’s gross domestic product contracted 3.8 percent in 2015, according to IBGE. The nation’s Ministry of Finance said earlier this month it expects the country’s economy to get back to growth in the fourth quarter of this year.
