Cape Verde’s Movement for Democracy (MpD) party has won an absolute majority in the country’s parliamentary elections. It means the MpD – the country’s main opposition party in the run-up to the elections – will be returning to power after 15 years, news agency Reuters reported.
The election was held on Sunday. According to preliminary results released on an official website, MpD obtained 53.5 percent of the votes.
The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) – which had formed the incumbent administration – obtained 37.5 percent of the votes in the election, according to official data.
“Now it is time to get to work and show that there is a solution for Cape Verde,” said MpD’s leader Ulisses Correia e Silva, quoted by Cape Verdean newspaper A Semana. Mr Correia e Silva will serve as the country’s new Prime Minister.
